It's a day most often met with trepidation: the day a mother returns to work after the birth of her baby.

Feeling nervous is completely normal, and fortunately most women report that the return to work goes more smoothly than they had originally anticipated!

A few working mothers have shared their advice to make the transition back to work just a little bit easier.

1. Ease back in.
"Return to work midweek to end of the week if you can. It will allow time for the both of you to get acquainted with the new routine and work out kinks. Also, do a dry run and prep anything you can the night before to make mornings smoother. " -Lindsey

2. Have your breastfed baby practice with a bottle before your return to work.
"Start working on baby taking bottles around 4 weeks." -Christine

"You only actually *need* one day's worth of milk (1-1.5 oz per hour you are away). And most babies take bottles just fine. Make sure your child care provider knows how to "bottle nurse" a baby. (Hold them in and go slow. Don't overfeed them.)" -Sarale

La Leche League has a few tips for bottle-feeding the breastfed baby.

3. Plan ahead for pumping at work.
"Invest in a good hands-free pumping kit. Make a plan of where you'll pump before you go back to work with HR." -Christine

"A good hands free pumping set up and space and time at work to use it is vital." -Sarale

You can create your own hands-free pumping bra by simply cutting small holes in a sports bra. The bra will hold your flanges in place, freeing up your hands to practice hands-on pumping to express even more milk, or making it easier for you to eat and answer emails while pumping.

4. Cut yourself some slack.
"Know that it's not easy to go back and tears are normal." -Christine

"Don't stress too much." -Sarale

What tips would you give to a new mother as she prepares to return to work?
